"These Mysteries are supposed to have been carried from Egypt by Zeradusht or Zoroaster, and instituted as an initiation into the principles of the religion which he had founded among the ancient Persians. Of the identity of Mithras with other deities there have been various opinions, but to the Persians, who first practiced his Mysteries, he was a sun god, and worshiped as the god of light. The Mysteries of Mithras were always celebrated in caves.
